Most people aren’t exactly experts when it comes to their air conditioners, so they tend to call an AC repair professional at the first sign of trouble. While calling a repair professional for a faulty air conditioner is a good idea, there are also a few things you can do on your own to keep your AC running smoothly.
Change Your Filters
The simplest yet most important piece of maintenance you can do for your AC system is to change the air filters. These need to be changed every one to three months, depending on how quickly they build up dirt and debris. For those with pets, you may have to change once every 30 days. At the very least, they should be checked monthly and switched out as necessary.
Clean the Coils
The condenser coil and evaporator coil in an air conditioner can get very dirty, especially if you have an outdoor unit. The dirt and debris that these coils collect eventually keep them from working properly, so take the time to wipe them off. Like with filters, your coils can and should be checked regularly and cleaned as needed.
Fix Coil Fins
The fins on evaporator and condenser coils can become bent and block the airflow. This can lead people to think that their air conditioner isn’t working, but simply bending back the fins will usually fix the problem. Hardware stores even sell a tool called a fin comb that will bend fins back to their original position.
